BREAKTHROUGH MOTOR SHOW JOINT VENTURE
Today marks a milestone in the long history of the Melbourne International Motor Show – the day that it forms a joint venture with Sydney’s motor show to become the Australian International Motor Show.
This means the 75th annual Melbourne Motor Show, which opens at 5pm on 27 February and runs until 6 pm on Monday 9 March, is the last to carry the Melbourne name. It is also the only major motor show in Australia in 2009. Incidentally, Melbourne’s first Motor Show in 1925 did not carry the Melbourne name either – in its early years it was called simply “International Motor Show”.
The latest name change, and the plans for a joint venture to alternate the Australian International Motor Show between Melbourne and Sydney, have just been announced by Sydney motor show organiser the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), Melbourne motor show organiser, the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC), and its new car division, AADA (Vic).
The first two-state event will be staged in Sydney in 2010, returning to Melbourne in 2011.
The FCAI and VACC see the combined national show as a new direction which maintains the tradition and heritage of the motor shows in Australia’s two biggest cities, and is in tune with the views of the many vehicle brands who exhibit at the Shows.
